Metadata, or data information, serves two purposes: 1) to describe standard data collection and management procedures; and 2) to describe how specific records (collections) deviate from these standards, either in their content or the context of their collection. The ultimate purpose of metadata is to provide sufficient information to determine the suitability of a data set for meeting a specific objective, such as an analysis or model. Items that significantly influence the quality or content of data will be identified and included in the standard set of metadata for both MARIS and state specific databases.
