1.2.1 Abstract:
The source data set, for Wisconsin's Multistate
Aquatic Resource Information System (MARIS)
information, is a statewide historical data set of
Wisconsin's Fisheries Lake Survey information. This data set contains summary information on habitat
evaluations, water quality and fish sampling. It exists in the DNR's central office, but is available for all regional staff. It contains mainly raw survey information, however in some instances only summarized information is available. The Multistate Aquatic Resource Information System
(MARIS) is a six state cooperative pilot project
to make accessible, via a common, internet-based
application, selected fish population survey data
from each of the cooperating states. MARIS states
include Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio,
and Wisconsin. These states have developed a
statewide fisheries survey database containing
information on relative or absolute abundance of
fish species, morphometry, location, and water
chemistry in selected lakes compiled from their
source state database. Each state will maintain
authority and responsibility for its own database,
but will support internet access through a defined
set of summary queries and reports.
1.2.2 Purpose:
The Multistate Aquatic Resource Information System
(MARIS) is a six state cooperative project to make
accessible, via a common, internet-based
application, selected fish population survey data
from each of the cooperating states. MARIS states
include Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio,
and Wisconsin. Wisconsin's source data raw survey
data is stored in over 20 Paradox files
that have been normalized. All of the files are
related including some lookup tables. While the
normalization process makes the storage of this
information more efficient, it makes
non-programmer access difficult. This database contains
mainly raw survey information, but doe have some summaries
available. The data are linked through a common survey protocol allowing retrieval of individual survey events.

99.2.5.1.3 Methodology Description: Wisconsin uses a specific coding system for both lake and species. Information on this coding scheme is available in the Wisconsin DNR's Fisheries Handbook. All data is verified by the field manager that collects the information. The data system screens for logical errors. Information about the lake area and shoreline length were made during hydro mapping of Wisconsin's surface waters during the 1960's. Information about how this data were collected can be obtained in Wisconsin's surface waters inventory publications. These publications also contain information on how water chemistry data were obtained. There were no standardized approaches to fish sampling used during the time period for which data is available. If individuals using this data need more specifics on the survey or the exact nature of the gear used during the survey will have to contact the WI DNR to obtain more detailed records on individual survey information. Individual surveys were designed and conducted by area fisheries managers to meet the needs of their program. Generally all fish were identified to species and measure to the nearest tenth of an inch (if measurements taken) Data from nets were pooled together for each days catch. We have adopted standard procedures as of 1998, however none of the data in the MARIS datasets adheres to these standards.
