1.2 Description
1.2.1 Abstract:
The source data set, for Minnesota's Multistate
Aquatic Resource Information System (MARIS)
information, is a statewide data set of
Minnesota's Fisheries Lake Survey, Creel Survey,
and Fish Stocking information. This data set
contains summary information on habitat
evaluations, water quality, fish sampling, fishing
pressure, and fishing success. It exists in the
DNR's central office but is owned and used by
Fisheries field staff to assist in Lake Management
planning. It does not contain all of the raw
survey and stocking data but does possess the most
commonly sought after report information. The
Multistate Aquatic Resource Information System
(MARIS) is a six state cooperative pilot project
to make accessible, via a common, internet-based
application, selected fish population survey data
from each of the cooperating states. MARIS states
include Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio,
and Wisconsin. These states have developed a
statewide fisheries survey database containing
information on relative or absolute abundance of
fish species, morphometry, location, and water
chemistry in selected lakes compiled from their
source state database. Each state will maintain
authority and responsibility for its own database,
but will support internet access through a defined
set of summary queries and reports.
1.2.2 Purpose:
The Multistate Aquatic Resource Information System
(MARIS) is a six state cooperative project to make
accessible, via a common, internet-based
application, selected fish population survey data
from each of the cooperating states. MARIS states
include Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio,
and Wisconsin. Minnesota's source data raw survey
and stocking data is stored in over 70 dBase files
that have been normalized. All of the files are
related including some lookup tables. While the
normalization process makes the storage of this
information more efficient, it makes
non-programmer access difficult. To simplify data
access for Fisheries field staff, an additional
statewide data set was developed using Oracle's
RDBMS. This database possesses summarized survey
and stocking information with a much simpler data
structure (fewer files). In addition, most of the
links of these files have been built into the
database system so its users do not need to be
aware of and link the files before requesting
data. The Information Technology industry name
for this database development methodology is
called data warehousing. Hence the name of the
new data set is the Fisheries Data Warehouse.
