1.2.1 Abstract:
The source data for Michigan's participation in the Multistate Aquatic Resource Information System (MARIS) comes from a statewide database of Michigan's aquatic resources. This statewide database is maintained by the Fisheries Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Data are converted, summarized, and compiled for use by the MARIS system.
1.2.2 Purpose:
The Multistate Aquatic Resource Information System (MARIS) is a six state cooperative project to make accessible, via a common, internet-based application, selected fish population survey data from each of the cooperating states. MARIS states include Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Data from the central database is converted, summarized, and loaded into a separate database that serves the MARIS queries. Microsoft Access is the tool used to perform these actions. Tables from the central system are linked to an Access database. Pre-defined queries are used to perform error-checking and data summarization. Queries are also used to load the MARIS tables which are linked to the Access database. This is a manual process that is performed at least once a year following the survey season. Updates may be performed more frequently at the discretion of the Division.
