1.2 Description
1.2.1 Abstract:
The
source data set, for Illinois’ Multistate Aquatic Resource
Information System (MARIS) information, is the Statewide Fisheries
Analysis System for Lakes (FAS-LAKES). FAS-LAKES is a comprehensive
collection of lake fish community sampling data and associated
limnological data collected by IDNR district fisheries managers
annually for the state of Illinois. Records consist of the actual
field measurements of fish and sampling conditions as recorded by IDNR
district managers rather than summaries of field data. Data tables
cover descriptive data of each lake sampled, of each sampling station,
methodology of each sample, limnology and weather conditions at the
sampling station, individual fish length:weight:age records, and fish
counts by species and centimeter size class. This data base serves as
the source information for annual lake fisheries status reports
submitted by district fisheries managers. It is also used for stock
assessments, evaluating creel limits, and most other aspects of
fisheries management decisions made by IDNR’s district and regional
managers.
Data Limitations: All data are entered in metric units. Data
primarily come from annual fall fish surveys, although spring survey,
and to a far lesser extent, summer and winter sample data are also
found in the database. Data are primarily collected using standard
IDNR methodology for lake sampling. Fish data covers the period of
1980 to present. Annual data sets exist for most major state lakes
managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Lakes, while
other lake data may be from single sampling events or samples taken at
irregular time periods. are referred to both by IDNR standard
name and unique state water number. Collections are chiefly from
state-owned or managed lakes. Lake Michigan fish surveys and surveys
of privately-owned ponds or lakes are NOT present in this
database.
Fish abundance data is based on actual numbers of fish collected or
counts of subsampled species (i.e., where a species is sampled for
only a portion of total sample collection time), extrapolated up to an
equivalent number for the entire sampling time (e.g., a species
sampled during just the first quarter (25%) of a sampling run or net
set will have its actual sample abundance multiplied by four (4) to
calculate the total abundance for that species in that sample). Fish
age data is primarily from scale readings. However, age data exists
for only a small percentage of all fish records. Fish gender and tag
information are not included in this database.
Sample data are submitted annually by each IDNR district fisheries
manager to the statewide FAS-Lakes database manager. After QA/QC
review of these data, district records are added to the statewide data
set. Generally, there is a 6-12 month lag between the lake sampling
date and when the database is summarized for MARIS.
1.2.2 Purpose:
The Multistate Aquatic Resource Information System (MARIS) is a six
state cooperative project to make accessible, via a common,
internet-based application, selected fish population survey data from
each of the cooperating states. MARIS states including Illinois, Iowa,
Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Illinois's source data
comes from raw lake population survey data stored in the state’s
Fisheries Analysis System for Lakes (FAS-LAKES) statewide database.
FAS-LAKES serves as the primary tool for ILDNR district fisheries
managers for storing and analyzing their raw survey population data.
Analyses generated from this database are the foundation of annual
lake fisheries status reports as well as the scientific basis for most
lake fisheries management decisions in state-managed lakes and
reservoirs.
The statewide database is based in Borland’s Paradox for DOS 4.5
database engine and consist of eight data tables and a number of
ancillary look-up tables. Tables within FAS-LAKES are related through
a key field which identifies the sample. The key consists of the
unique water number identification of the lake sampled, the year and
season of the lake sample, and sampling station within the lake. Data
tables include general sampling lake station, and sampling methodology
descriptions, data related to lake limnology on the day of the
collection, water temperature-dissolved oxygen profile data, data
describing how individual electrofishing sampling runs or net sets
were conducted, fish species length frequency information, and
individual fish length:weight:age information. The MARIS data set for
Illinois is derived from the FAS-LAKES database by extracting the
limnological and lake morphometric data associated with each lake
sampled directly from the FAS-LAKES database, while fisheries and
water quality data are summarized either through fisheries analysis
programs or Paradox database query routines developed for MARIS.

FAS-LAKES Database is updated annually, following the survey season
and submission of lake status reports. All reports are due to the
state central office by April of the year following the lake survey
season. The MARIS database should be derived annually by June 30
following the survey year.

While data provided on the MARIS web page are public information, the
Illinois Department of Natural Resources reserves the right to
restrict access to data on species of concern (i.e., state endangered
and threatened species). These data are available only through the
IDNR, Division of Natural Heritage - Biological Conservation Database
manager (same contact address as for the Illinois Fisheries Analysis
System database). The department requests acknowledgment of the agency
in any publications or products derived from its data, although the
burden of any interpretation or use of said data is strictly upon the
user. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources provide these data
“as is” and makes no guarantee or warranty concerning the accuracy

Fishtab is a custom, stand-alone Windows program developed in C by the
Robert Illyes of the Illinois Natural History Survey to provide
Illinois district fisheries managers and administrators with a tool
for creating tabular output from the Illinois Fisheries Analysis
System for Lakes database. Fishtab generates fisheries data summaries
either as printed output or as ASCII text files for single samples or
collections of fish samples. Outputs include Species Abundance,
Species Length Frequency by user-defined size classes, Catch Per unit
Effort by Abundance and Biomass, and Species Relative Stock Density
summaries.

Description:
Illinois DNR Fisheries Managers use several unique coding schemes in
collecting field data from lake fish population surveys. All data
records entered into FAS-LAKES are identified by the lake where the
sample originated. However for most data records a five-digit water
body code unique to that lake, reservoir, or pond is used in order to
save storage space within the database. These unique codes are
assigned at the IDNR regional level and a full set of codes is
maintained within the state central office. All samples are also coded
to the season of collection and the number of the sampling trip made
to that lake within the season (e.g., spring: March - May(1), summer:
June-August (2), fall: September-November (3), winter:
December-February (4); a spring, trip #1 would be coded as 11, while a
similar number fall trip is assigned a code of 31. Finally, all fish
collected are identified to species, but recorded using unique three
letter codes, generally pneumonically-based on the species common name
(e.g., BLG=bluegill)
Data quality control and assurance are handled in three ways. The FAS-LAKES
data entry routines have range and value checks built into custom data
entry forms to trap or flag questionable entries. District managers
are encourage to verify their data against their field sheets prior to
submitting the data for inclusion in the statewide FAS-LAKES database.
Finally, the database manager for the statewide FAS-LAKES will run a
number of data checks against the district data to identify any
additional errors, as well as to spot check actual data records. Any
databases with questionable data are omitted from the statewide
database until the data issues are resolved by the district manager.
Lake spatial information: shoreline length, area, and latitude and
longitude are generally calculated from digital coverages of the lake,
based on 1:24,000 scale USGS topo maps as maintained in the Geographic
Information System Arc/Info (ESRI). Where a GIS coverage or shapefile
does not exist for the lake, the lake morphometry calculated are based
on digital planimeter values taken by the district manager of that
lake. Lake latitude and longitude values are based on the outfall of
that lake, generally this is the center of the spillway for the lake.
Details of fish sampling, lake water quality, and fish processing
procedures are found within the Manual of Operations for the Division
of Fisheries, Illinois Department of Natural Resources. This manual is
available upon request to the IDNR-Division of Fisheries and should be
available for download from the MARIS data clearinghouse during 2001.

Description:
Field data collection from whole lake community fish surveys by IDNR
district managers. Local data entry from field data sheets via custom
data entry screens of the Illinois Fisheries Analysis System for
Lakes. Data are keyed in once with QA/QC checking done by clerical or
district manager staff. The underlying Paradox for DOS data tables are
transferred annually from district offices to the state central office
via disk or e-mail. Data are checked through a second QA/QC process at
the state central office and once data error issues are resolved with
the appropriate district manager, the annual raw district data are
uploaded to the statewide database.
Data from the statewide FAS-LAKES database are queried and summarized
in the appropriate MARIS format and exported as ASCII delimited text
files from Paradox. These files are then sent to the main MARIS data
clearinghouse site manager in Champaign, IL for access through the
MARIS Internet homepage.
